An orphan, a monk, and a promise
In 2013 a little girl of two had no family able to care for her. It was a monk — Geshe Lobsan Gyaltsen — who took her in. He fed her, clothed her, put her through school, and raised her with the love of a father, alongside his life of prayer and practice.
She is fifteen now, and in Class 10. She places second or third in her class, and her teachers speak as warmly of her conduct as of her marks. The photos on this page tell the rest better than words: the toddler in his arms, the schoolgirl in her uniform, the young woman she has become.
But with every year she grows, the costs grow faster. Each new school level brings higher fees than the last — tuition, books, uniforms, transport and daily expenses all rising together — and a monk has no salary to meet them. What was once manageable through small offerings has outgrown what Geshe Lobsan can carry: he is finding it hard to completely support her education on his own.
